Tomato chirdillaein (Mashed tomato)

Tomato chirdillaein (Mashed tomato) is a Konkani dish that can be had along with rice as a side dish. In this method of mashing vegetables we will use cooked tomatoes as well as do seasoning in the end. Since tomatoes themselves have a sour taste of their own you need not have to add any ingredient to bring a sour taste to the dish.

Ingredients

You need

  • 2 big size ripe tomatoes
  • 1 or 2 green chillies (or as per your spiciness level)
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A small spoon Fresh coconut oil
  • Water as required
  • Salt to taste

For seasoning

  • Coconut oil as required for seasoning
  • A small spoon mustard
  • A small spoon cumin seeds/mustard
  • One sprig of curry leaves

Method

Wash the tomatoes and boil them in water for 5 to 7 minutes this for loosening the peel.

Boiling the tomatoes

After boiling remove the tomatoes from the boiled water you can see that the peel has been torn from the tomato after boiling. Once cooled you can peel off the skin of the tomatoes.

 Mash the tomato and add sliced green chillies, asafoetida and salt and mash again.

Now heat oil in a kadai for seasoning. Add mustard seeds and when they splutter add cumin seeds followed by curry leaves. Pour the seasoning over the mashed tomatoes.

Serve with rice.
