Carmbal chirdillaein (Mashed star fruit)

Carmbal chirdillaein (Mashed starfruit) is also a simple and tasty dish that can be had as a side dish along with rice. To prepare carmbal chirdillaein you need ripe star fruit (‘Carmbal’ is Konkani term for Star fruit). The ripened star fruits will be having less sour taste and this sourness will be sufficient to bring a tangy taste to your dish. So in this recipe we will not be adding any outside ingredients which give a tangy taste to the dish as we have done during the preparation of Mashed Brinjal.

You can use either the white variety or the green variety star fruit. In my recipe I have used the ripe green variety star fruit. As I have already mentioned in my previous recipe on mashing of vegetables that in Konkani cuisine the basis of all these mashing of vegetables is that you do it with cooked /uncooked vegetables.

In this recipe we will cook the star fruit and then mash it. Another point that I have mentioned on mashing vegetables is that we will be seasoning them in the end. But in this recipe seasoning is not done. This method will look similar to Ambo/Avallo/ Nimbuvo chirdillaein.

Ingredients

You need

  • 1 big size ripe star fruit (I have used the green variety starfruit. You can even use the white variety star fruit)
  • 1 or 2 green chillies (or as per your spiciness level)
  • A pinch of asafoetida
  • A small spoon Fresh coconut oil
  • Water as required
  • Salt to taste
