Atanya humman (Green peas curry) is a dish made usually in Konkani homes. It is prepared as a side dish along with rice, poori, chappatis, idiyappam, wheat dosa, upma….etc. It is very easy and less time consuming dish that you can prepare in a jiffy. In this recipe we have prepared atanya humman using the green variety peas. We have taken Pachuvo attano (Green peas), kook (Optional) (Potato) and tomato.
Ingredients
You need
- ½ cup (Attano) green peas (I have used dry green peas)
- 1 medium size potato (Optional)
- 1 big size tomato (If you want to have the tangy flavour of tomato you can use half ripened tomato)
- A pinch of asafoetida
- Salt to taste
For seasoning
- Coconut oil as required for seasoning
- A small spoon mustard
- 1 sprig curry leaves
- Chilli powder as required
- A small spoon turmeric powder
Method
Wash and soak green peas for 5 to 6 hours. While the green piece is soaking cut potato and tomato into cubes and keep aside.
Now pressure cook the green peas along with the potatoes (If you are adding potatoes). We pressure cook as follows: Add green peas and potatoes (Optional) into the pressure cooker and add sufficient salt and water. Close the lid and after the first whistle simmer the flame to low for about 5 to 8 minutes. Once the time is up switch off the gas. Open the lid only after cooling. Now heat oil in a kadai/pan and once the oil is hot enough add mustard seeds and when they splutter add curry leaves. Now switch off the flame and add chilli powder sauté it for a second. Be careful that you do not burn it. Then add turmeric powder and sauté it for a second and add the tomatoes.
Sauté the tomatoes for 1 or 2 minutes and add the cooked potatoes (Optional) and green peas. Add sufficient water and salt and cook till the skin of the tomatoes lossen. Do not make them mushy.
Once the tomatoes are cooked add asafoetida mix well and remove from flame. Garnish with grated coconut.
Your Atanya humman (Green peas curry) is ready to be served.
Serve warm or hot with poori, chapattis, idiyappam, wheat dosa, upma etc…
